Ode to the Modern Woman

Is it yoga, or yogurt that makes you happiest?
Perhaps it's the new television series
About women who have problems
Like those you have (or wish that you had).
Maybe it's a pair of pants you bought from the consignment store
The yellow ones that cost three dollars
And wrap your legs like you're hiding something
While all the men at Wal-Mart
Turn their heads as you inspect the mangoes.
It could be the new foundation you found at Sephora,
Or the Vaseline trick you learned from your aunt
That thickens your lips with promises.
A cake you made following a recipe from Rachel Ray,
And you could not believe how the frosting turned out just right.
Saturday mornings, sleeping under flannel sheets,
Cozied by a crackling fireplace, while snow falls outside,
Mug of cocoa warming your hands, red pepper on your tongue.
The expanse of the universe opened before you under the summer sky,
As you lie on a blanket, watching shooting stars
And contemplating your smallness beside the man
Who liked your Facebook status.
